Taipei, TAIWAN – September 23, 2025 – CyberLink Corp. (5203.TW), a pioneer in AI and facial recognition technologies, announced that its AI facial recognition engine, FaceMe®, has been recognized as a top-tier performer in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Face Analysis Technology Evaluation (FATE) benchmark for Age Estimation and Verification.
In the critical Challenge-25 age restriction test, NIST’s leading standard for AI-powered age verification, FaceMe ranked fifth and achieved an outstanding 95.3% accuracy, demonstrating its reliability in determining whether an individual is above or below legal age thresholds.
What is the NIST Challenge-25 Age Verification Test?
The NIST Challenge-25 Age Verification Test evaluates facial age estimation algorithms by testing how accurately they classify individuals against a threshold age of 25. The test evaluates images of 17-year-olds, and if the AI estimates the age to 25 or older, it is considered a false positive.
In practical applications of AI-assisted age verification, a slightly higher age threshold is usually set to balance accuracy and convenience. For example, when determining whether a customer meets the legal age for purchasing tobacco or alcohol (which varies by country, typically 18 or 21 years old), AI systems commonly use 25 years as the verification cutoff. Individuals whose estimated age falls below the threshold undergo additional verification procedures, such as ID checks, to ensure compliance. This also highlights the benchmark significance of the Challenge-25 evaluation.
Why is AI-based Age Verification Critical?
Accurate age estimation technology is essential for ensuring legal compliance, consumer protection, and public safety. It enables retailers to prevent underage purchases, digital platforms and financial services to restrict adult-only content, and security systems to enforce age policies in venues and kiosks.
With tightening global regulations, CyberLink’s FaceMe delivers accurate AI-powered age estimation to help organizations stay compliant, reduce risks, and build trust.
FaceMe Excels in NIST FATE Age Estimation and Verification Test
In NIST FATE’s Challenge-25 Age Verification Test, FaceMe achieved an impressive 95.3% accuracy, ranking fifth globally and placing it among the world’s leading biometric age verification solutions. In another NIST FATE test evaluating age estimation accuracy, FaceMe also performed exceptionally well, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of just 2.87 years—only 0.35 years behind the top-ranked algorithm.
"FaceMe® has ranked among the global top 10 in NIST’s previous FRTE test, demonstrating outstanding facial recognition accuracy; and in the latest FATE Challenge-25 age estimation and verification analysis, it has also achieved top-tier performance," said Mei Guu, President of CyberLink Business Unit 2. "With leading AI technology, FaceMe delivers precise age verification, providing governments and businesses with a trusted safeguard to protect consumers and ensure compliance."
